Lochalsh Reuse & Recycle Hub
– A wee place with a big purpose.
The Lochalsh Reuse & Recycle Hub is a community-led project in Kyle of Lochalsh, managed by Grace Sikorski McCulloch on behalf of the Kyle & Lochalsh Community Trust.
We work to reduce waste, support local people, and keep as much as possible from needlessly ending up in landfill – all while creating a welcoming space for the community.
What We Do – The Reuse Hub
We sell donated items and hope to encourage people to shop second-hand before buying new. Our shelves are an ever-changing mix of clothing, books, toys, household items, bric-a-brac, CDs, DVDs and the occasional random find.
Since opening in October 2022, we’ve diverted tens of thousands of items from landfill – including thousands of clothing items, books and toys – giving them a second life in the community. All income generated through sales go to keeping the lights on and the fridges cold so every sale really does help keep this wee project going!

The Community Fridge
Alongside the shop, there is the Community Fridge inside to reduce food waste. Surplus food from local businesses and growers is collected and made available free of charge for anyone to take. It is not means-tested – it’s about preventing perfectly good food from being thrown away.
We track the weight of food taken (with the help of customers using our scales), allowing us to measure our impact.
2024: 1,800 kg of food saved
2025: 8,100 kg of food saved
That’s over 8.1 tonnes of food kept out of landfill in 2025 alone.
When food goes to landfill, it breaks down without oxygen and produces methane – a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to climate change. By redistributing surplus food locally, we reduce waste, cut emissions, and make sure good food is eaten instead of discarded – plus packaging can be recycled correctly giving it a second life!
We are incredibly grateful to the Co-op in Kyle, Spar in Balmacara, and local business + households who donate surplus food regularly.
Community Impact
The Hub is powered by a fantastic team of around 15 volunteers. Some give regular weekly shifts, others help when they can! From collecting surplus food in the evenings, to sorting donations, pricing stock, running the shop and keeping the fridge stocked – this project simply would not exist without them. We also attend local events throughout the year with preloved stalls plus helps us spread awareness about our wee project!
Donations
We’re always grateful for donations from local households – they keep the Hub running.
Donations can be dropped off during opening hours. However, please try to bring one or two bags at a time. Our volunteers need time to check, sort and price everything properly, and we receive many donations each day. With limited storage space, it’s easy for us to run out of room. Occasionally, we may need to pause accepting donations to help us work within our space constraints. We really appreciate your understanding when this happens. Please follow our social media pages for the latest updates before bringing items in.
(See posters below for guidance on what we can and cannot accept.)
Opening Hours
Tuesday – Saturday, 9am – 4pm
Closed Sundays and Mondays
Please note: opening hours may occasionally change at short notice due to volunteer availability. If you are making a special trip, we recommend checking our social media pages first

Skill Sharing
In 2020 we worked with a number of local growers and food producers to host informal skill sharing. These events all took place online and have been edited and uploaded on to YouTube. Videos include no dig method, composting, fruit trees and bee keeping
